I was having this issue and a reoccuring error popup. To fix the popup I closed Word and searched my mac for normal. Whenever I reopened Word it recreated this file and I accidentally solved my styles issue at the same time. OK, if the font changes as Word inserts typographical quotation marks, for example, then I would try a different font. The font file for the one you are currently using may be damaged. Typically, Word substitutes the font when a character is missing, which obviously shouldn't happen for a normal quotation mark.

Hi, same problem here. Seemingly random switch to Helvetica, no matter what font I am writing in. It often changes font whilst I am typing a word. I am using Word subscription so I assume it is the most recent version and my default font is times new roman, but as I type it will change to Helvetica automatically. This also happens when I copy and paste, some of the document will be one font, but part of it will be Helvetica. I also cannot change the helvetica font when I highlight the document and change font. Please assist.

Here is a screenshot of my settings. These are features that were added early in Word's development that made Word seem more intuitive. The thing is, they don't do a very good job and are far from intuitive when they do something that messes up your document. Their results have been the subject of many appeals for help here. As you can see, like Suzanne, I keep most of them turned off.
